UNDERSTANDING TEACHING AND LEARNING, K–12 (CEDUC 621)

This course examines the intricacies of how people learn and the effect teacher understanding has on making informed instructional decisions. The featured experts who provide commentary for this course include Dr. Paul Eggen, Dr. Donald Kauchak, and Dr. Jeanne Ormrod.

  • Analyze and understand why some instructional strategies are more effective than others.
  • Apply proven instructional strategies based on current learning theory.
  • Increase knowledge of how the brain stores and retrieves information and the role this process plays in students’ ability to learn new academic content.
Dr. Paul Eggen is a professor of education and a founding faculty member at the University of North Florida. He is the author of seven books, and his Educational Psychology text, which he coauthored with Dr. Donald Kauchak, is in its seventh edition. Dr. Eggen’s research interests are cognitive learning and teacher development.
 
Dr. Donald Kauchak is a professor of education at the University of Utah. He has taught and worked in schools in nine states and served as a faculty member and/or administrator in higher education for 35 years. Dr. Kauchak has co-authored eight texts in education, as well as numerous articles in research journals. His current research interests include instructional theory and teacher education and development.
 
Dr. Jeanne Ormrod is professor emerita of educational psychology at the University of Northern Colorado and affiliate professor of education at the University of New Hampshire, where she occasionally teaches educational psychology courses. Dr. Ormrod’s areas of specialization are learning and cognition, study strategies, and pedagogy.
 
As part of the WEA Academy mission, we strive to improve the quality of professional development for all educators. The Academy has partnered with Cardinal Stritch University and Teachscape, a provider of online professional development for K–12 educators. Teachscape-developed online courses for graduate credit are available to WEAC members from NCA and NCATE accredited Cardinal Stritch University.

The WEA Academy recommends that educators enroll and take this course with other colleagues and educators they work with.  Collaboration is an important component in professional learning for educators, and since this is an independent learning course, cohort learning is ideal for this situation.

For successful completion of this course, you will earn three graduate credits through the University Outreach Professional Development Department at Cardinal Stritch University. The course may be completed where and when it’s best for you in a self-paced, independent online study format. Work at your own pace, and finish the class within a 17-week deadline. Regular tuition is $450 for each course which includes all materials; however, WEAC members receive an additional $100 discount for each course for a final tuition rate of $350/course.
