RESEARCH-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, K–12 (CEDUC 546)

This course explores nine instructional strategies that 30 years of educational research has shown to increase students’ academic achievement. The featured experts who provide commentary for this course include Dr. Ceri Dean and Dr. Jane Doty.

  • Learn and apply each of the nine research-based strategies.
  • Identify how and when to use these strategies in ways appropriate to your grade level and content area.
  • Increase understanding about specific teacher and student behaviors that have a direct impact on student achievement.
Dr. Ceri Dean is vice president of Field Services at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) in Aurora, Colorado. In addition to leading McREL’s work in instruction and school improvement, Dr. Dean leads the Field Services team for the Regional Educational Laboratory Program, working directly with schools about such topics as instruction, data-driven decision making, professional learning communities, standards and assessment, and leadership.

Dr. Jane Doty is a principal consultant at McREL in Aurora, Colorado. She has nearly 20 years of experience as an educator in New York, New Jersey, South Carolina, Florida, and Texas.
 
As part of the WEA Academy mission, we strive to improve the quality of professional development for all educators. The Academy has partnered with Cardinal Stritch University and Teachscape, a provider of online professional development for K–12 educators. Teachscape-developed online courses for graduate credit are available to WEAC members from NCA and NCATE accredited Cardinal Stritch University.

The WEA Academy recommends that educators enroll and take this course with other colleagues and educators they work with.  Collaboration is an important component in professional learning for educators, and since this is an independent learning course, cohort learning is ideal for this situation.

For successful completion of this course, you will earn three graduate credits through the University Outreach Professional Development Department at Cardinal Stritch University. The course may be completed where and when it’s best for you in a self-paced, independent online study format. Work at your own pace, and finish the class within a 17-week deadline. Regular tuition is $450 for each course which includes all materials; however, WEAC members receive an additional $100 discount for each course for a final tuition rate of $350/course.
