FOUNDATIONS OF READING AND LITERACY, K–6 (CEDUC 545)

This course focuses on sound theories and principles for developing literacy skills in students. It provides participants with a comprehensive knowledge base in the reading process and the most effective instructional techniques for teaching students to read. The featured experts who provide commentary for this course include: Dr. Isabel Beck, Dr. Nell Duke, Dr. Connie Juel, Dr. Louisa Cook Moats, Dr. Michael Pressley, Dr. Timothy Rasinski, Dr. Catherine Snow, and Dr. Dorothy Strickland.

  • Increase understanding of the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Apply the most effective instructional strategies to improve students’ skills in the five components of reading.
  • Adapt instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of English language learners and students who struggle to read.
Dr. Isabel Beck is a professor in the School of Education and a senior scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Beck’s research has focused on beginning reading, acquisition of decoding skills, vocabulary, learning from text, and teacher development. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to reading research, the National Reading Conference honored her with the Oscar S. Causey Award in 1988. For her contributions to the field of literacy, Dr. Beck was elected to the International Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame. In 2000, she received an award from the American Federation of Teachers for “bridging the gap between research and practice.”
 
Dr. Timothy Rasinski is a professor of education in the Reading and Writing Center at Kent State University. Dr. Rasinski’s primary areas of interest include working with struggling readers in elementary and middle school, and reading fluency instruction. He also has a special interest in teacher development in literacy education and has been working to interpret research findings for educators. Dr. Rasinski is a past editor of The Reading Teacher.
 
As part of the WEA Academy mission, we strive to improve the quality of professional development for all educators. The Academy has partnered with Cardinal Stritch University and Teachscape, a provider of online professional development for K–12 educators. Teachscape-developed online courses for graduate credit are available to WEAC members from NCA and NCATE accredited Cardinal Stritch University.

The WEA Academy recommends that educators enroll and take this course with other colleagues and educators they work with.  Collaboration is an important component in professional learning for educators, and since this is an independent learning course, cohort learning is ideal for this situation.

For successful completion of this course, you will earn three graduate credits through the University Outreach Professional Development Department at Cardinal Stritch University. The course may be completed where and when it’s best for you in a self-paced, independent online study format. Work at your own pace, and finish the class within a 17-week deadline. Regular tuition is $450 for each course which includes all materials; however, WEAC members receive an additional $100 discount for each course for a final tuition rate of $350/course.
