Racism is the result of a complex interplay of individual attitudes, collective social values, and institutional practices. When we begin to better understand these forces, examine our own implicit bias’s and take small or large action there is movement forward to irradiate racism in our schools and in our society.
Institutional racism and racial justice are two of many areas impacting our schools, our community, our world. Educators rarely the opportunity to discuss the impact of institutional racism and racial justice in education or explore ways of creating systemic change. The WEA Academy virtual book studies are intended to provide the safe space needed for authentic discussions that allow us to seek understanding, reflect on our self-awareness/knowledge, and work through discomfort so we can discover actionable steps for creating change together
Participants are asked to commit to three tasks: 1) select and read The New Jim Crow, 2) connect 4 times online with teachers and ESPs in a virtual format, and 3) explore ways you can address institutional racism and advocate for racial justice.
